Once upon a time, delicious vegan baked goods were pretty scarce unless you baked them yourself. Well, not anymore. Today, so many of our local restaurants and bakeries now have at least one vegan dessert option. Whether you’re in the mood for a box of doughnuts, a custom cake, or a warm cinnamon bun—if you can imagine it, it’s probably available somewhere in Victoria.

Whether you’re vegan, plant-based, dairy-free, or just plain curious, read on for some of the best vegan dessert options in Victoria.

Petit Gateau

If you’re looking to really go all out for your next special occasion, an order of custom desserts from Petit Gateau is really the way to go. This fully vegan bakery offers some of the most beautiful cakes in town. They also offer gourmet cupcakes, multi-layered cakes (custom themes available), tarts (such as lemon meringue or chocolate hazelnut), chocolate chip hazelnut cookies, and so much more. This is an online shop that operates out of a local commercial kitchen so they don’t have a storefront as of yet. The best way to order on social media or via email. Orders should be placed at least 2-3 weeks in advance. Check out their Instagram page for some incredible examples of what they’re capable of.

Bunny’s Nook Kitchen

Although Bunny’s Nook Kitchen just opened up shop at the end of 2019, they have already secured their spot as a local community favourite. Not only do they serve up great breakfast and lunch dishes for everyone (vegan or not), their wide selection of daily house-made desserts are always vegan. They’ve got brownies, creative cinnamon rolls of various types (e.g. maple walnut), yumo bars, lemon bars, exciting cheesecake options, and more. They have a few seats on a small patio on the side of the building with ocean and mountain views. Gluten-free options are available as well. Bunny’s Nook Kitchen is open for takeout from Tuesday to Saturday.

Soupa Café

Soupa Café may be best known for their healthy soups, wraps, and sandwiches, but some may be surprised to know that they also have a fully plant-based menu, including a diverse assortment of fantastic vegan pastries and desserts. From pumpkin pie, to date squares, brownies, gluten-free chocolate cake, and cinnamon rolls, they also serve up the popular New York-style cheesecake (blueberry or chocolate). Another thing we love about Soupa Café is their commitment to community engagement, with initiatives like their musical instrument drive. Open seven days a week, Soupa Café is available for takeout or delivery via Tutti, DoorDash or Skip the Dishes.

Fern Café and Bakery

As mentioned in our recent profile on Fern, they have got us totally covered for plant-based meals, coffee-based drinks, and sweet treats. As a fully vegan café and bakery, of course they offer a huge selection of desserts. They are best known for their Big Bad Cinnamon Buns, their doughnuts (rotating flavours like classic carnival or Oreo). They also offer legendary chocolate chip cookies, berry crumble, muffins, scones, brownies, and more. Gluten-free options are also available. For daily flavour updates, see their Instagram stories.

Working Culture Bread

Working Culture Bread might just be Victoria’s favourite new bakery. They not only bake some of the best organic sourdough bread in town (try the chocolate loaf), but they also have some great vegan desserts and pastries. Beyond their classic fudge brownie, they sometimes switch it up with cherry or Turtles brownies too. If you’re looking for one of those old-fashioned ball park pretzels, this is also the place to go. Although their menu may be short and sweet, according to the owners, this is a shop that prides itself on “doing a few things really well.” Stop in and see for yourself. Open Thursday to Sunday.

Yonni’s Doughnuts

Yonni’s Doughnuts is a well-known local shop, but did you know they also have some wonderful vegan options to choose from? We don’t say this lightly, but Yonni’s just may have perfected the classic raspberry jam-filled doughnut. They also serve giant vegan apple fritters and classic vanilla glaze doughnuts. You can get your fix at Discovery Coffee or the Whole Foods Café. Or, you can also order a batch online and for pickup at their bakery the next day (minimum order of six).

Pure Lovin' Chocolate

If you’re looking to treat yourself or to impress your date with a classy gift, look no further than Fan Tan Alley’s decadent chocolate shop, Pure Lovin' Chocolate. These handcrafted artisan chocolates are vegan, gluten free, and soy free. From decadent peanut butter cups to Fleur de Sel caramels, this organic chocolate shop definitely has something for everyone. Pure Lovin’ Chocolate also offers custom orders for weddings or parties. They can even create a custom truffle flavour just for you. Open seven days a week and available for online orders.
